Communication activities for Christmas

Facing boredom with the same old speech and language exercises? Here are four speech and language exercises with a Christmas theme you may do with your kids in the weeks leading up to Christmas, prepared by Speakable

  • Feely bag. Fill a feely bag with as many Christmas-related materials as you can, including ribbon, bells, stars, and wrapping paper. Instruct the child to close their eyes while reaching inside to take one thing. You might ask the youngster to do the following, depending on what you are working on
    • before receiving something from the bag as a reward, practise their speaking tone
    • prior to receiving a prize from the bag, students must practise the target words that include their speech sound
    • naming every object they come across while concentrating on the target speech sounds in conversation
  • Christmas Lunch: The purpose of this game is to improve memory. Play the same game as "I went to the store and got a..." but instead say, "On my plate, I have some/a.....," such as turkey, sprouts, roast potatoes, Christmas pudding, etc. You might grab some food things (plastic food from the role-playing area) or pictures of food to aid the kids. On their plate, the kids can choose whatever food they like, and you can arrange them up how they choose. At the conclusion, hide the images or food, and see who can recall what was there!
  • My Christmas List. Give the kids a few minutes to ask each other what their companion wants from Santa after being asked to team up. Ask each kid to then share with the group what their spouse wants for Christmas. To utilise in this exercise, you might prepare some question cards, such as "What?" and "Who?"
  • Bits & Pieces. Again, fill a feely bag with decorations for Christmas, such as tinsel, ribbon, stars, bells, etc. Choose 1 item from the bag each in turn. Talk about the objects and make important inquiries like
    • How does it appear?
    • What sensation do you have?
    • Where may we locate it?
    • Who may use it?
    • When could we employ it?
To engage for this exercise, you might make some question cards with the following words: what, were, who, when, how.
