Tips for writing fantastic essays in High School
High School period is remarkable for students due to the changes in class timetable, different teachers, different classrooms, and many other factors. One important factor is the need to communicate in a more sophisticate manner through essays.
Nowadays, it is very easy to find information: Google and Wikipedia are great helpers when there’s the need to search something. However, High School is not only about finding information, but it’s also the ability to understand and share a formed opinion about the searched and studied topic. Essays are one of the tools that High School students use to share their perspectives and clarify positionings.
Sometimes, students might find it difficult to write the essay in a manner that readers (especially teachers) will understand and consider the text interesting, logic and pleasant. If your child needs some tips to perform a great essay, we selected some of them to help:
- Never forget to structure the essay. Basically, essays must have an Introduction, a Body and a Conclusion. The Introduction prepares the reader about the topic and to check your opinion/position/statement with further information. The Body is the largest part of the essay, with logical arguments, examples, challenging points etc – throughout the Body, the reader must understand the reason for the original statement shown in the Introduction. The Conclusion summarises the facts and ideas to ensure the Introduction provided a relevant and trustworthy statement.
- Paragraphs have their own structure as well. It becomes easier when considering paragraphs as ‘micro-essays’, with their own initial statements, explanation and examples for that statement and a summarising part to explain the relevance of it to the essay.
- Revision and proofreading are very important! When the essay all written, there might be some small or big mistakes in it, from misspelled words to the very meaning of a sentence or paragraph. Take some time to read it through in search of possible mistakes. It helps to have a second person to read the essay and identify details the writer sometimes can’t easily notice.
- Perfection comes from practise. The more you write, the better your essays come to be. You can learn from past mistakes in order to not repeat them, you can try new words and writing styles and can focus more on the idea behind the essay, and not on the effort to write.
These tips above are only a few of the good practices to improve writing, but one fact summarises them all: the more you read and write, the better is your own writing skills.
