November is Good Nutrition Month

Due to events such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, people tend to eat in a less balanced way between October and November. Therefore, it was established that November should be a month to be more aware of what is eaten, not only for November but for all the other months. Fast food and stressful lifestyles affect people’s concern regarding how they eat, so campaigns such as Good Nutrition Month are helpful to remind of the great benefits of eating in a healthier way. Among the benefits, Medical News Today lists the following ones:

  • Weight loss
  • Reduced cancer risk
  • Diabetes management
  • Heart health and stroke prevention
  • Good habits to be transferred to children
  • Strong bones and teeth
  • Better mood
  • Improved memory
  • Improved gut health
  • Having a good night’s sleep

For a good maintenance of nutritional habits, Susie Elelman (Australian television presenter, radio broadcaster and author) has developed the SPRING habits:

  • S: Seasonal fruit and vegetables, as raw and fresh as possible
  • P: Protein, to build and repair blood, bones, muscles and skin
  • R: Read Labels, so you can check levels of sugar, unhealthy fats, salt, preservatives and other chemical components
  • I: Increase water consumption, at least 8 glasses a day
  • N: Nuts, which are sources of calcium and antioxidants to lower cholesterol and triglycerides
  • G: Green vegetables, which help sustain weight loss, and have vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, phytochemicals, antioxidants and SQ sugars, helping fight cancer and strengthen gut bacteria

Good nutrition is not the same as having a diet. It is only a more conscient way of consuming food in order to allow a healthier life. If you are a parent or carer of a child, you should always pay attention to the child’s eating habits and help children eat healthier for a better life, which even affects physical, emotional and intellectual skills.
