How to explore Valentine’s Day in SLP therapy

Last Friday we celebrated Valentine’s Day, but this date is so amusing for children that it could be still explored for the rest of the month in activities which remind this day. We have sorted some activities which are very easy to prepare and would engage children under treatment in an exciting way!

  • Eleven Hearts. Cut eleven paper hearts (or buy them, if you already have some budget for that) and write a part of a story in each of them. Organise the hearts in the correct order and instruct the child to read it in that correct order. Then, shuffle the hearts and instruct the child to place them back in the correct order. Ask the child some questions about the story in order to check reading comprehension. If you want a suggestion of story, click in this link to find a ready one.
  • Repetition Hearts. Cut ten paper hearts (or buy them, if you already have some budget for that) and use a marker to number them from 1 to 10. Put them in a non-transparent bag. Every time the child has to repeat some word, the therapist can ask the child to pick a random heart from the bag: the number on the heart is the number of times the child has to repeat that word.
  • Valentine’s Day Card. Social and writing goals can be explored by helping the child write a card with feelings and caring words for people from family, friends and so on. A good discussion about social skills, writing skills, organisation skills and many other advantages will rise from this activity.

We hope you can have fun and use this date to engage patients! At Speakable, our team of therapists are always developing new activities to suit the individual needs of each patient. Contact us in order to check how we could help!
