Have you heard about Aphantasia?

The human brain is a fantastic structure in many ways. It is not only the organ responsible for all the body’s functions and controls, but it also is a person’s main tool to learn, communicate and socialise. Every occasion needs our brain to activate some function, be it minimal or significant. When it works under some average medical parameters, it is considered neurotypical. When not matching those parameters, it is called neurodiverse. Though there are many commonly recognised neurodiverse conditions such as the Autism Spectrum, Dyslexia and ADHD, there are some conditions still under study which are not formally recognised by specialists. One of these conditions yet to be recognised is Aphantasia. According to recent studies from the University of Newcastle, Aphantasia is the difficulty or inability on visualising imagery on a voluntary way.

Watch this interesting video which explains a little more about Aphantasia:

At Speakable, the Visualisation & Verbalisation Technique is one of our main methodologies for Speech and Language Pathology treatments. Aphantasia brings some light over the difficulty some of our patients demonstrate on "seeing images with the mind", a phenomenon which could indicate some level of this condition, affecting the process of Visualisation + Verbalisation.

How capable are you on visualising imagery with your mind? If you want to know the answer, try a simple test by clicking on the following link: Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire

Though Aphantasia is not officially recognised, Speakable’s team of Speech Pathologists is always searching for new and innovative ways to provide the best solutions for our clients’ treatment! Feel free to contact us any time to discuss our services and innovations!
